Carter took what she handed him and lit up, watching the smoke billow into the air, eyes on the flickering orange heat in his palms. No wonder men thought they were Gods when they were the only ones to handle the substance that was fire. It could so easily destroy.
The gun shot that echoed around them didn't even make him flinch. But he did look around. They were outside, it could have been anyone's gun, and someone inside would take care of them if the Snakes had been the one to fire. "Stupid fucking Snakes." he muttered, taking a drag. He was going to let them have it.

Ava did not like guns, but she had to face them. She always had grown scared of them after her parents' deaths because that's the exact thing that killed them. She took a deep breath and knew that Carter had kept walking, but she was having a flashback to the site of their bodies, the blood still seeping through their clothing. She was just a small little kid. Ava's eyes were staring at a wall now, her body shuddering and about to give out. The smell of the blood still stung her nose as she bent over and lost her stomach.
Her eyes stung with tears as she slowly slumped down against the wall of a building and just covered her face with her hand. She glimpsed them holding her hand and telling her they were okay, but they soon uttered nothing but a dieing breath. Ava's fingers fisted in her own hair.

Carter realized that Ava was having some sort of episode and while he wasn't very good at interpersonal things, he wasn't heartless. So he went back to her and put a strong hand on her shoulder and guided her away from the wall. "They can't shoot through brick." He said.
They'd be fine. But they could get out of there if she so desired. Carter moved his hand to the middle of her back and just started walking. It didn't matter much where they went as long as he got her away from here. That much he could figure out.

Ava shuddered, the fingers in her hair tightening a bit out of her emotional instability right at that moment. She knew what Carter was saying but it wasn't that simple, nothing like what she was thinking was ever that simple. She just allowed him to pick her up and support her, her arm around his shoulder. She stumbled with him.
"Thank you." She whispered quietly, not like herself anymore than before. Her eyes were less excited, but more defeated than anything. She never got like this unless someone brought her parents up, but outside of the Tigers, no one knew she lost her parents at a young age. She intended to keep it that way for as long as she lived.

Carter just grunted in response. A sort of 'yeah' of a 'you're welcome'. Carter was a man of very few words. He was a body language sort of guy all in all. Once they were about a block away from where they started, he dropped his hand, figuring she would rather fend for herself. He didn't know Ava well at all, but he knew she usually liked to do things her way and be under her own control. Most Tigers did... So he didn't want to start anything. If she wanted his support she could ask for it. Better than being yelled at for providing it.
He tucked his hands into the pockets of his jeans. His breath clouding into the fall air. It was getting colder. He wasn't sure he liked that. The cold made him feel even more lonely.
